Syrian War Daily – 28th of January 2018

Hello and welcome to the 320th installment of the SWD.

Military events/news are listed below by the governorates:

Aleppo:

Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army, backed by Turkish Air and Land Forces captured two localities from the Syrian Democratic Forces’ Yekîneyên Parastina Gel (People’s Protection Units) east of Afrin region, as a part of the operation ‘Olive Branch’ (AR: Ghasin al-Zaytun, TR: Zeytin Dalı). Free Syrian Army captured the strategic Jabal Birsaya and nearby village of Qastal Jandu. Attack on Jabal Birsaya was spearheaded by 100 elements of Al-Jaysh al-Watani al-Suri’s (Syrian National Army) Faylaq al-Thalith (Third Corps/Legion), backed by 50 elements of the Turkish Armed Forces, and with 500 Faylaq al-Thalith’s elements in rear lines. Reports suggest that 15 elements of YPG were killed in clashes for Jabal Birsaya, while the footage can only confirm death of four elements and capture of another four elements.

Yesterday, an element of the Syrian Democratic Forces’ Yekîneyên Parastina Jin (Women’s Protection Units) and Yekîneyên Antî Teror (Anti-Terror Units) Avesta Khabour carried out a suicide attack against the Turkish Armed Forces and Free Syrian Army in the vicinity of Hamam village in Jinderes subdistrict. According to the YPG, Khabour blew herself up and reportedly killed several elements and destroyed a Turkish tank.

Turkish Armed Forces conducted strikes over 20 targets in Afrin region. The strikes were conducted by 13 Turkish Air Force’s warplanes. According to the reports, Turkish Land Forces’ artillery shelling of Gubaleh village killed three and wounded seven civilians. Turkish Armed Forces also stated that at least 73 elements of Yekîneyên Parastina Gel were “neutralized” today and 557 since the start of the operation ‘Olive Branch’.

Idlib:

Tribal elements in the northern Hama and southern and eastern Idlib formed Tajammu Abna al-Ashair, in order to defend the front line villages against the Syrian Arab Army’s attacks. The newly-formed group consists of several battalions and 300 fighters from Al-Malawi and Bani Khalid tribes/clans. Commander in the group, Ahmed Rajab al-Hussein stated that the fighters are already deployed to the front line in Idlib and Hama governorates.

Homs:

Syrian Arab Army and Free Syrian Army’s Jabhat Atoun clashed south of Talbiseh in the Northern Homs pocket. Syrian Arab Army’s artillery shelled Jabhat Atoun’s position in the area, killing one fighter.

Deir al-Zour:

Islamic State’s Amaq Agency reported a suicide attack against the Syrian Democratic Forces in the vicinity of Gharanij in the eastern Deir al-Zour. According to the agency, 15 elements of the Syrian Democratic Forces were killed and wounded, as well as two vehicles destroyed in the attack.

Damascus:

Syrian Arab Army’s artillery shelled Hawsh al-Salihiyah, Awtaya, Douma, and Harasta in the East Ghouta. According to the Syrian Civil Defense (The White Helmets), five civilians were killed in the shelling of Douma.

Ahrar al-Sham-led rebel forces started a new attack against the Syrian Arab Army’s positions in ‘Army Armored Vehicle Base’ in Harasta. The attack started with a tunnel bomb and a VBIED, which targeted the vicinity of the base. Clashes continue between the two in the vicinity of the base.

Afghanistan

Takhar Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (Taliban) attacked Afghan National Police’s positions in Qala area of Namak Ab district. One element of the Afghan National Police was killed and one wounded in the clashes.

Kunar Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan raided Afghan Local Police’s checkpoint and killed one policeman in Shirgul area of Nari district.

Laghman Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed six and arrested four elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Alingar district.

Nangarhar Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed an element of the Islamic State in Achin district.

Islamic State’s improvised explosive device destroyed Afghan National Army’s vehicle, killing five and wounding several soldiers in Khogyani district.

Badghis Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan reported that Afghan National Security Forces’ convoy retreated from Karais area of Qadis district, two days after arriving in Karais area in order to conduct the operations against the group. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan stated that three elements of the Afghan National Security Forces were killed, ten wounded, and a tank destroyed, during the convoy’s stay in the area. Three elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan were also wounded in the encounter.

Ghazni Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed ten and wounded 20 elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Andar, Waghaz, and Deh Yak districts. Furthermore, Afghan National Security Forces destroyed three vehicles and several ammunition caches.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan raided Afghan National Police’s checkpoint in Masoumi area of Qarabagh district, killing two policemen. Similarly, Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan raided Afghan Local Police’s checkpoint in Shinaki area of Gelan district, wounding one policeman.

Paktika Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed six fighters of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Barmal district.

Farah Province:

Afghan National Security Forces conducted large-scale operations against the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Khaki Safed and Farah districts, killing 20 and wounding 13 elements of the group. Reports suggest that the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is retreating from the central areas in Farah province towards Khaki Safed district, due to Afghan National Security Forces’ recent operations against the group.

Urozgan Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed 13 and wounded 11 elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Chora district, according to the Afghan Ministry of Defense.

Zabul Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed an element of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Shinkay district.

Helmand Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed five, wounded four, and arrested 23 elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Sangin, Nad Ali, Nawa-I-Barakzayi, and Nahri Saraj districts. One of the 23 arrested elements is Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s commander Mir Hamza.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan overran Afghan National Army’s checkpoint in Sayedan area of Jerashk district, reportedly killing 11 soldiers in the process. One element of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan was wounded in the encounter. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan seized five assault rifles, two PK machine guns, an RPG launcher, and large quantities of ammunition from the checkpoint.

CJTF-OIR:

CJTF-OIR announced a change in their publishing policy. Now two strikes reports will be published each week, on Mondays and Fridays.

Islamic State’s sniper killed an element of the Egyptian National Police in the city of Al-Arish.

Pakistan:

Islamic State assassinated an element of the Balochistan Police in the city of Quetta, provincial capital of Balochistan.

Other:
