Hello and welcome to the 310th installment of the SWD.

Military events/news are listed below by the governorates:

Aleppo:

Syrian Arab Army captured Qaytal and Umm Sanabil villages from the rebel factions in the southern Aleppo.

Kataib Thuwar al-Sham and Liwa Biariq al-Sham joined Harakat Nour al-Deen al-Zenki in the western Aleppo. Liwa Biariq al-Sham was formerly affiliated with Faylaq al-Sham and has around 500 fighters, while Kataib Thuwar al-Sham was previously affiliated with Ahrar al-Sham and has around 1500 fighters. Kataib Thuwar al-Sham was formed in the April of 2015 after a merger of several smaller rebel groups, prominent groups in it are Liwa Amjad al-Islam, Harakat al-Nour al-Islamiya, and Kataib al-Hudda. Kataib Thuwar al-Sham had 2500 fighters when it was formed.

Idlib:

Yesterday’s reports about the Islamic State capturing several villages from the Syrian Arab Army east of Sinjar should be taken with a grain of salt and the border areas in the southern Idlib should be considered as disputed, since there are a number of unconfirmed reports circulating about the area. Several reports suggest that the Islamic State captured over a dozen of localities from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham in the southern Aleppo – southern Idlib – northeastern Hama region.

Islamic State reportedly captured Rasm al-Dhaba, Al-Muwaylah, Abu Ajwa, Muakar Shamali, Rasm al-Basl, Tawrat, Mushirifah, Rasm Arira, Qarat Rubua, Thaniyat al-Sawan, Zaghir, Al-Mashulkhiyah, Al-Halibiyah, Al-Salihiyah, Abu Khanadiq, Umm Aj, Malihah Saghirah,Awijat al-Qana, Abu Mahalah, Al-Hanin, Al-Janina, Al-Khatabiyah, Luwaybidah, Al-Jadidah, Nafha ,Andarin ,Al-Samaqiyah, Huma, Najm al-Zuhur, Umm Qurun from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham in the aforementioned region after the latter’s reported withdrawal from the region.

Islamic State captured Syrian Arab Army’s tank in the vicinity of Abu al-Duhur airbase.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s and Harakat Nour al-Deen al-Zenki’s Sharia judge Mohammad Abbas (Abu Hamza al-Masri) was killed by the Syrian Arab Army’s shelling several days ago in the border area between Idlib and Hama governorates. Abu Hamza fought in Afghanistan and Pakistan for Al-Qaeda and spent 16 years in a prison in Egypt, before arriving in Syria and joining Jabhat al-Nusra in 2012.

Turkish border guards killed a civilian trying to illegally enter Turkey near the city of Khirbet al-Jawz.

Deir al-Zour:

Islamic State’s Amaq Agency reported that a suicide attack targeted Syrian Democratic Forces’ gathering in Al-Bahra village, northwest of Hajin. Separately, Islamic State’s Amaq Agency also reported that Islamic State’s sniper killed two elements of the Syrian Democratic Forces in the city of Gharanij.

Damascus:

Syrian Arab Army’s artillery and Syrian Arab Air Force targeted Hazrama, Al-Nashabiyah, Arbeen, and Harasta in the East Ghouta. Reports suggest that eight civilians were killed by the shelling of Arbeen.

Faylaq al-Rahman reportedly repelled Syrian Arab Army’s attack on Arbeen front.

Jaysh al-Islam accused the Syrian government of treating wounded Islamic State’s fighters, who were wounded in the clashes between the two sides in Al-Zayn neighborhood, south of Damascus. Jaysh al-Islam claimed that wounded Islamic State’s fighters left Al-Hajar al-Aswad through Al-Asali checkpoint and were being treated in Al-Mahayni hospital. Islamic State still holds two buildings it captured from Jaysh al-Islam in Al-Zayn neighborhood several days ago. Jaysh al-Islam continues to repel Islamic State’s attacks on Al-Bina al-Abyad in Al-Zayn neighborhood, reportedly wounding four IS’ elements and damaging an armored bulldozer in the latest failed IS’ attack.

Quneitra:

Islamic State-linked Jaysh Khalid ibn al-Walid briefly captured Al-Bakkar checkpoint and a school in Al-Bakkar from the Free Syrian Army. Free Syrian Army’s commander Abu Jawad al-Jubaila stated that 40 elements of Jaysh Khalid ibn al-Walid infiltrated Al-Bakkar from Ain Thakar and briefly controlled the aforementioned locations, before the Free Syrian Army launched a counterattack and recaptured the locations.

Iraq

Diyala:

Islamic State killed two elements of Al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units) in Al-Zafra area of Al-Azim district. Islamic State also seized two assault rifles from the killed elements.

Afghanistan

Kunduz Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed five and wounded five elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (Taliban), as well as destroyed two fighting positions and an ammunition cache in Chardara district. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan reported that it repelled Afghan National Security Forces and United States Army’s joint offensive in Chardara district. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan claimed that five United States’ soldiers were killed, as well as 12 elements of the Afghan National Security Forces in the failed offensive.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan captured Afghan National Army’s post in the city of Kunduz, allegedly killing 20 soldiers in the process. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan also reported that it destroyed a tank and a vehicle during the attack.

Sar-e Pol Province:

Afghan National Security Forces wounded two elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in the province.

Baghlan Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan repelled Afghan National Army’s attack in Puli Khumri district and destroyed a tank in the process.

Kapisa Province:

Afghan National Security Forces discovered and defused two Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive devices and 13 mines in Tagab district.

Laghman Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed four elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, including one of the local commanders, Muhibollah in Alingar district. Furthermore, one element of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan was also wounded.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan clashed with the Afghan National Army in the city of Mihtarlam, capital of Laghman Province. Seven elements of the Afghan National Army were reportedly killed and additional five wounded, while one element of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan was wounded. Furthermore, Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan reported it destroyed Afghan National Army’s tank with an RPG during the clashes in the city.

Nangarhar Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed 13 elements of the Islamic State in Chaparhar and Haska Meyna (Deh Bala) districts. Among the 13 killed elements is Islamic State’s local commander Mowlavi Jalal Khalq.

Khost Province:

Afghan National Security Forces arrested 12 elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan and seized three vehicles with 40 weapons in Spera district.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive device targeted a group of Afghan National Army’s elements in Alishir district, killing two soldiers.

Herat Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan claimed that Afghan National Security Forces’ convoy retreated from Kushk (Rabat-e-Sangi) district, due to heavy casualties. The convoy arrived nine days ago to Nahr Sayyad and Sang Bar areas in order to assist in the operations. According to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, the convoy was trapped in a minefield and exposed to the attacks during the nine days it was present in the areas. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan claimed that 17 elements of the Afghan National Security Forces were killed, 13 wounded and four tanks destroyed in the nine days. At least one element of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan was killed and three wounded in the encounter.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan ambushed Afghan Local Police’s elements in Khajrono area of Shindand district. The ambush reportedly killed one and wounded two policemen.

Daykundi Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan overran two Afghan National Army’s checkpoints in Kangari area of Kijran district. Three elements of the Afghan National Army were reportedly killed in the clashes, while the remaining elements withdrew from the two checkpoints. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan seized a PK machine gun and three assault rifles from the checkpoints.

Ghazni Province:

Afghan National Security Forces conducted large-scale operations against the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in the province, killing 22 and wounding 13 elements of the group. Furthermore, nine Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive devices were destroyed in the operations.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan captured two military posts from the Afghan National Army in Giro district. According to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, 12 elements of the army were killed and another five wounded in the clashes for the two posts. Similarly, Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan attacked Afghan National Army in Shalgar district, reportedly killing eight and wounding three soldiers.

Afghan Local Police’s element surrendered to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan with his weapon and vehicle in Shalgar district.

Farah Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan overran Afghan National Police’s checkpoint in Ganhakan area of the city of Farah. Six elements of the Afghan National Police were reportedly killed, while one element of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan was killed and another wounded in the clashes for the checkpoint. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan seized a PK machine gun, four assault rifles, and two motorcycles from the checkpoint.

Urozgan Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed three elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan and destroyed several positions, weapons depots and ammunition caches in the mountainous area of Sarikhi Tarinkot.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan raided Afghan National Police’s checkpoint, killing one and wounding two policemen in Tori Cheni area of Chora district.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s snipers reportedly killed six elements of the Afghan National Army in Talani area of the city of Tarinkot, capital of Urozgan Province.

Zabul Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed three and wounded five elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, as well as destroyed a vehicle in Daychopan and Arghandab districts.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan ambushed a group of Afghan National Army’s soldiers, killing two and seriously wounding two in Makarak area of Mizan district.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s landmine targeted Afghan National Army’s foot patrol, killing three in Daychopan district.

Afghan National Army’s element defected to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Jildak area of Daychopan district.

Helmand Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan raided Afghan National Army’s checkpoint on Herat road in the vicinity of Haji Abdul Qayom area of Jerash district. Three elements of the Afghan National Army were reportedly killed and wounded in the raid.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive device destroyed Afghan National Army’s pickup, killing four soldiers in the vicinity of Shorabak camp & airbase, northwest of Lashkar Gah. Similarly, Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive device destroyed Afghan National Army’s armored personnel carrier in Dorahi area of Nad Ali district.
