Syrian War Daily – 1st of December 2017

Hello and welcome to the 262nd installment of the SWD.

Military events/news are listed below by the governorates:

Aleppo:

Free Syrian Army’s Liwa al-Shamal (Northern Brigade) repelled Syrian Democratic Forces’ infiltration attempt into the village of Al-Jat. Director of the Information Office in Liwa al-Shamal, Badr Kajak said that SDF‘s fighters attempted to infiltrate the village during the night, however, they were targeted by Liwa al-Shamal’s fighters, resulting in three injuries among the SDF‘s ranks.

Raqqa:

Several left over Islamic State’s improvised explosive devices exploded in the city of Raqqa. The first explosion killed one and wounded one civilian in Al-Thuknat neighborhood. The second explosion killed a civilian in Al-Rumayla neighborhood. The third explosion killed three Syrian Democratic Forces’ fighters near the sugar factory, in the northern part of Raqqa.

Deir al-Zour:

Syrian Democratic Forces captured Abu Hammam and Al-Hayyan from the Islamic State, the capture was officially reported by the SDF. During the clashes for the two aforementioned localities, 17 IS’ fighters were killed.

Islamic State’s snipers killed two Syrian Arab Army’s soldiers in the villages of Al-Hamdan and Al-Eashayir in the vicinity of Al-Bukamal (Albu Kamal), according to the Amaq Agency’s statement.

Damascus:

Ahrar al-Sham repelled another Syrian Arab Army and Syrian Republican Guard’s attack on its positions in the ‘Army Armored Vehicle Base’ in Harasta. According to Ahrar al-Sham’s statement, more than 10 SAA & SRG fighters were killed in the failed attack.

Three Islamic State’s fighters from Al-Hajar al-Aswad area surrendered themselves to the Syrian Arab Army at Barada checkpoint. The surrenderees were close to the former Islamic State’s commander in Al-Hajar al-Aswad, Abu Hisham al-Khabouri. The individuals that surrendered are Abu Suhaib al-Khabouri, Abu al-Zahra and an unnamed brother of Abu Hisham al-Khabouri.

Syrian Arab Air Force’s Mil Mi-25 attack helicopter was downed by the rebel forces from the Jabal al-Sheikh operations room reportedly with MANPADS. The helicopter was hit near Beit Jinn and it crashed in the vicinity of Kanaker, killing everyone on board.

Director of the media office of the Jabal al-Sheikh operations room, Ziad Abu Saleh commented the situation in Tell al-Baradiyah’s area. According to Abu Saleh, SAA was able to make minor advances on the eastern side of the hill, while losing 12 soldiers. Three rebel fighters were killed in clashes, according to Abu Saleh. Syrian Arab Army reportedly captured the whole of Tell al-Baradiyah yesterday.

Iraq

Salah al-Deen:

Islamic State’s Amaq Agency claimed assassination of a group of elements from Iraqi National Intelligence Service in Abu Hayat area, near Al-Tarmiyah.

Afghanistan

Faryab Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (Taliban) launched an attack against Afghan National Army’s checkpoint in Shirin Tagab. IEA didn’t manage to capture the checkpoint from ANA, so they imposed a siege on it. During the initial attack on the checkpoint, two ANA‘s elements were wounded.

Kunduz Province:

Afghan National Security Forces’ operations in Imam Sahib district killed one and wounded one IEA fighter.

Badghis Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan raided Afghan National Army’s checkpoint in Ab Kamari district, reportedly killing two elements and wounding additional five.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan captured Afghan National Army’s soldier with his weapon and motorcycle in Qala i Naw district. In a similar operation, IEA captured three ANA‘s elements in Jawand district.

Nangarhar Province:

Afghan National Security Forces conducted operations in Achin, Khogyani, and Pachir Aw Agam districts against the Islamic State. ANSF killed 17 IS’ fighters, including a fighter from Uzbekistan and wounded 11 fighters, including five from Pakistan. Furthermore, the operations resulted in destruction of several IS’ weapon caches in the districts.

NATO-led Operation Resolute Support carried out a drone strike against the Islamic State’s headquarters filled with weapons and ammunition in Khogyani district. The strike killed four and wounded eight IS’ fighters.

Paktia Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan launched a raid on Afghan National Army’s checkpoint in Zurmat district. One ANA‘s element was killed and another wounded in the raid, IEA didn’t suffer any casualties.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive device killed an element from the Afghan National Army in Zurmat district.

Khost Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive device targeted Afghan National Army’s foot patrol in Qalandar district, wounding four elements.

Farah Province:

Afghan National Security Forces’ operations against the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan resulted in death of one IEA fighter and injury of two others, as well as destruction of two vehicles and 12 improvised explosive devices in Bala Buluk district.

Afghan National Security Forces conducted anti-insurgency operations in Shiwan village in Bala Buluk district, killing 12 and wounding 16 IEA fighters. Farah Police’s spokesman, Iqbal Bahar stated that the operations will continue in Bala Buluk district, until it is cleared from the IEA‘s presence. Compared to the other districts in the province, Bala Buluk is one of the more insecure ones, where IEA has widespread influence in most of the villages, allowing them to stage attacks against the security forces.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan launched a surprise attack and assassinated Afghan National Army’s commander, Sardar Wali. Wali was supposed to take command of three checkpoints in Marbatat city.

Urozgan Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s sniper killed and wounded eight elements of the Afghan National Army in Nuyan area. One IEA fighter was killed in the encounter.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan raided two Afghan National Police’s positions in Joura district, resulting in death of two ANP‘s elements.

Nimruz Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s sniper killed two elements of the Afghan National Police in Khash Rod district.

Helmand Province:

Afghan Air Force conducted airstrikes against the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s positions in Kajaki district. The airstrikes reportedly killed 12 IEA fighters and destroyed three headquarters and one drug factory.

Two Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive devices targeted Afghan National Army’s foot patrol in Jarash district. The first improvised explosive device targeted the foot patrol, while the second one targeted the reinforcements, resulting in death of four ANA‘s elements.

CJTF-OIR:

Between the 27th and the 30th of November 2017 CJTF-OIR has conducted 16 strikes in Syria. CJTF-OIR‘s main focus in Syria at the moment is Deir al-Zour-Albu Kamal region where they did 13 strikes supporting SDF‘s operations against IS destroying three tactical vehicles, a rocket system, seven ISIS watercraft, an IS barge, a weapons cache, 21 IS vehicles, a heavy weapon, four supply routes, an IS fighting position, and an explosive hazard.

Somalia:

Islamic State’s fighters assassinated a member of the National Intelligence and Security Agency in Afgooye, Lower Shebelle province.

Other:
