Syrian War Daily – 25th of June 2017

Hello and welcome to the 133rd installment of the SWD.

Military events/news are listed below by the governorates:


Syrian Democratic Forces fully captured Al-Qadisiyah district from Islamic State in the western part of Raqqa. According to Amaq, in Al-Qadisiyah and Al-Barazi, IS killed eight SDF‘s fighters and wounded two.

South of Raqqa, SDF captured Al-Farakh village from Islamic State.

Syrian Arab Army advanced along the Ithriya-Raqqa against Islamic State and reportedly captured Syriatel and Tal Habari. If SAA continues with regular advances against IS on this front, we might see an IS’ pocket east of Khanaser soon.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham attacked Abna al-Sham’s HQs in Idlib’s countryside, however, the latter was prepared and reportedly killed several fighters of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.


Syrian Arab Army’s commander in the 18th Division, Brigadier General Fuad Khaddour, was killed by Islamic State as he led operations against the group, east of Arak. Khaddour was one of the few Syrian generals honored by Russia for their role in fighting against Islamic State.


Syrian Arab Army restored full control over Madinat al-Baath after rebels managed to capture a part of it yesterday. Similar to yesterday, Israeli Air Force got involved in the fighting, as once again, several mortar shells / projectiles fell inside Israeli-held Golan Heights. Israeli warplane targeted SAA‘s BMP, wounding five soldiers.

Rebel “Daraa Martyrs Documentation Office” reported death of four Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s fighters due to clashes with SAA in and around Madinat al-Baath.


Rebels were able to repel Jaysh Khalid ibn al-Walid’s attempt to advance in Hayt, which the latter besieged two days ago. Rebels reportedly destroyed two tanks, a technical, and a machine gun position. Furthermore, rebels seized a BMP from the failed Jaysh Khalid ibn al-Walid’s attack.



Iraqi forces offered remaining IS fighters in Old Mosul the last chance to surrender before the former launches possibly a final attack. However, IS fighters don’t think about surrender in west Mosul as they’ve launched a large-scale attack against Iraqi forces in several districts. Clashes occurred in Al-Mashahedah, Al-Shafaa, Bab al-Toub, Al-Tanak, Al-Risala and Al-Yarmouk. According to Amaq Agency, IS is in full control of Al-Tanak and Al-Yarmouk districts and is storming Al-Risala.

Besides this huge assault in west Mosul, IS also claimed death of seven Iraqi soldiers by improvised explosive devices in Al-Mashahedah, and death of 11 members of Iraqi Federal Police due to inghimasi (suicide fighters) attack in Bab al-Bayd neighborhood.


Iraqi Air Force carried out several airstrikes in western Anbar and reportedly killed around 30 IS’ fighters and destroyed one locality used by IS to manufacture improvised explosive devices.


On the 24th of June 2017 CJTF-OIR has conducted 34 strikes in Syria. CJTF-OIR‘s main focus in Syria at the moment is Raqqa region where they did 25 strikes supporting SDF‘s operations against IS destroying 16 fighting positions, five vehicles, two ammo caches, a recoilless rifle, a supply cache, and an UAS launch site; and suppressing an IS tactical unit.

Other areas where nine airstrikes occurred are Abu Kamal (Al-Bukamal) and Deir al-Zour, destroying 15 IS oil storage tanks, eight IS oil barrels, six IS oil stills, a vehicle, three IS-held buildings, two command and control nodes, an IS staging area, a mortar system, a tactical vehicle, and an IS oil refinery. Islamic State clashed with the elements of Somali National Army in Jaror area, east Puntland. Amaq claimed death of two Somali soldiers in the encounter with IS’ fighters.
