Syrian War Daily – 9th of January 2019

Hello and welcome to the 664th installment of the SWD.

Military events/news are listed below by the governorates:

Aleppo:

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham recaptured Tell al-Syriatel near Darat Izza several hours after the Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army (Al-Jaysh al-Watani al-Suri (Syrian National Army)) captured it. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham captured one element of the Free Syrian Army’s Firqat al-Hamza (Hamza Division) during its recapture of Tell al-Syriatel. Clashes between the two sides continue in western Aleppo near the southern part of Afrin region. Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army managed to capture at least four elements of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham in the aforementioned clashes.

Idlib:

Vehicle-borne improvised explosive device killed one and wounded one civilian in the city of Idlib.

Hama:

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham took control of all of Al-Jabhat al-Wataniya lil-Tahrir’s (National Liberation Front) areas in Al-Ghab Plain and Jabal Shashabo regions, after the latter decided to dissolve in the aforementioned areas following the yesterdays’ advances by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham in the region. The two sides signed an agreement, which states that all of the former Al-Jabhat al-Wataniya lil-Tahrir-held localities will be governed by the Syrian Salvation Government. Al-Jabhat al-Wataniya lil-Tahrir will also hand over its heavy weaponry to Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, and its elements will be allowed to leave towards northern Aleppo.

Deir al-Zour:

Yekîneyên Parastina Gel (People’s Protection Units) released a statement announcing that its forces managed to arrest eight foreign elements of the Islamic State in eastern Deir al-Zour. Full statement released by the Yekîneyên Parastina Gel’s Media Center;

The last phase of al-Jazeera Tempest campaign to eliminate IS mercenaries continues in Hajin areas and its districts, and after the remarkable progress of our forces, IS mercenaries have been encircled in a narrow spot after being inflicted with heavy losses by our forces in many places so the mercenaries resorted to launch a wide range of counter-attacks in an attempt to impede the advance of our forces, as well as attempts to target the civilians fleeing their areas.

In this context, after tracking and monitoring of the electronic devices, our forces managed to arrest a group of terrorists of foreign nationalities who were planning to target the civilians and commit massacres against them.

The arrest of the mercenaries took place on 6-7 January, as they arrested eight terrorists from the following countries: the United States of America, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Germany.

The information obtained by YPG from the arrested mercenaries was:

– Adel Rahimov (Abu Amin Uzbeki), 58 years old from Uzbekistan.

– Farhad Qarouf (Abu Belab Uzbeki), 28 years old from Uzbekistan.

– Mohammed Dolat (Abu Musab Tajki), 22 years old from Tajikistan.

– Askar Zermanbatov (Abu Dawood Tokha), 27 years old of Ukraine.

– Satipk Uchipav (Abu Roqia), 30 years old from Kazakhstan.

– Bimurziv Bekjan (Abu Sara), 30 years old from Russia.

– Sulai Noh Su (Abu Sulaiman al-Ameriki), 16 years old from the United States of America.

– Lucas Gulab (Abu Ibrahim al-Almani), 31 years old from Germany.

Afghanistan

Faryab Province:

Afghan National Security Forces wounded five elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (Taliban) in Andkhoy district.

Balkh Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan overran two Afghan National Security Forces’ military posts in Chahar Bolak district. According to reports, 14 elements of the Afghan National Security Forces were reportedly killed and 14 wounded in the encounters. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan seized 29 assault rifles, a PK machine gun, a mortar, and a Humvee from the posts.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s Al-Emarah News claimed that 63 elements of the Afghan National Security Forces defected to the group in Khas Balkh district.

Nangarhar Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed two elements of the Islamic State in Khogyani district.

Badghis Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed four and wounded three elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Murghab and Muqur districts.

Ghazni Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed one and wounded three elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Ghazni district.

Urozgan Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan overran an Afghan National Security Forces’ post in Chato area of Deh Rawud district. According to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s Al-Emarah News, 26 elements of the Afghan National Security Forces were killed and wounded in the encounter. Five elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan were also killed in the same encounter.

Nimruz Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed one and wounded two elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Zaranj district.

Helmand Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s snipers killed five elements of the Afghan National Security Forces in Bailory, Parchawi, and Tor Pul areas of Nad Ali district.

Kandahar Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s snipers killed four elements of the Afghan National Security Forces in Mandozo area of Maywand district.
