Syrian War Daily – 21st of May 2019

Hello and welcome to the 796th installment of the SWD.

Military events/news are listed below by the governorates:

Aleppo:

‘Afrin Liberation Forces’ (Hêzên Rizgariya Efrînê) released a new statement claiming that the group conducted two operations against the Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army in northern Aleppo. Full statement released by the group;

On 19 May, our forces carried out an attack targeting a site of the mercenaries of the so-called “al-Shamiya Front” in the village of “Masha’la” of Shera, where fierce clashes broke out between our forces and mercenaries, during which eight mercenaries were killed.

On May 20, our forces detonated an explosive device targeting the headquarters of the mercenaries of the so-called “Ahrar al-Sharqiyah” in the village of Basutah in the area of Shirawa, where one mercenary was killed and two others wounded.

Rebel factions shelled Al-Shihan square and Masaken al-Sabil areas of Aleppo city. According to the Syrian Arab News Agency, six civilians were wounded by the shelling.

Raqqa:

Left over Islamic State’s improvised explosive device wounded three civilians north of Raqqa city.

Hama:

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, backed by Jaysh al-Izza and the rest of Al-Jabhat al-Wataniya lil-Tahrir (National Liberation Front) launched a counterattack against the Syrian Arab Army on Kafr Nabudah front in northern Hama. The counterattack started with a suicide-vehicle borne improvised explosive device attack, but was reportedly repelled by the Syrian Arab Army.

Damascus:

Left over improvised explosive device killed one and wounded one civilian in Harasta in East Ghouta.

Afghanistan

Kunduz Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed seven elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (Taliban) in Khan Abad district.

Herat Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive device destroyed an Afghan National Security Forces’ vehicle in Doghi area of Rabat Sangi district.

Ghazni Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed nine and arrested six elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Deh Yak district.

Farah Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed eight elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Bala Buluk district.

Helmand Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan killed two elements of the Afghan National Police in an attack on a checkpoint in Khaksat Jamia area of Nahri Saraj district. Similarly, an element of the Afghan Local Police was killed in an Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s attack on a checkpoint in Zarif Kusa area of Nahri Saraj district.

CJTF-OIR:

CJTF-OIR announced a change in their publishing policy. Now one strike report will be published each week on Mondays.
