Syrian War Daily – 19th of December 2018

Hello and welcome to the 643rd installment of the SWD.

Military events/news are listed below by the governorates:

Raqqa:

Islamic State’s Amaq Agency stated that an improvised explosive device killed one and wounded two elements of the Syrian Democratic Forces near Al-Karama in eastern Raqqa.

President of the United States of America, Donald Trump declared a victory against the Islamic State in Syria and hinted at a withdrawal of the United States Army’s personnel from the country. According to reports, the United States Army’s personnel is expected to withdraw within 24 hours, while the entire withdrawal process is expected to take between 60 and 100 days.

Hama:

Free Syrian Army’s Jaysh al-Izza claimed that 30 elements of the Syrian Arab Army were killed and 15 wounded in an ambush near a checkpoint on Al-Masasneh front in northern Hama. The claim was shared by the group’s spokesman, Mustafa Maarati.

Homs:

Left over Islamic State’s improvised explosive device killed a civilian near the city of Al-Qaryatayn.

Deir al-Zour:

Syrian Democratic Forces’ Media Center released a report regarding today’s engagements with the Islamic State in the governorate;

Al-Baguz axis: Our fighters launched an attack on the terrorists’ positions, which resulted in leaving a number of killed and injured in their ranks. They advanced in this axis and were able to install 10 new points while the International Air Force carried out two air strikes targeting the terrorists’ positions.

On the other side of this axis, our fighters advanced a distance of 1 km and were able to install 17 new points after they launched a heavy attack on the terrorists’ positions, killing and injuring a number of them.

In another side of this axis, in the evening, our forces launched an attack on the points and fortifications of the terrorists, and clashes irrupted, in which a number of terrorists were killed and others got wounded, and our fighters made a progress of 1 km and managed to install 14 new points. In an attempt by the terrorist organization to initiate to the attack, they shelled the positions of our fighters with RPGs. Concurrently, the Coalition’s forces shelled the positions of the terrorists with mortars amid launching several raids on their positions.

The intermittent clashes continued on all fronts of this axis, and there were interspersed with shelling with mortars.

2 – Hajin axis: Violent clashes occurred this morning, following an attack by our fighters, killing a number of terrorists and wounding others as the bodies of some of them kept at the hands of our fighters with their weapons. The terrorists bombed the positions of our forces from afar with mortars and artillery, but the bombardment did not result in any damage to our forces.

Our fighters carried out a combing operation in the area in which they had advanced in the morning. They found a number of laptops and a number of other documents.

The terrorist organization launched an attack at 9:00 am on the positions and points of our forces, using all types of heavy, medium and light weapons, including Dushka, and our fighters confronted it. The clashes lasted for several hours, during which our fighters killed and wounded a number of them, and the rest of them fled. Immediately, our military engineering teams began dismantling and removing a number of mines that the terrorists had planted in the area.

On the other front of this axis, violent clashes broke out between our fighters and a group of the terrorist organization just before mid-day and lasted for several hours, in which the terrorists used Dushka weapons and car bombs, two of them were detonated. They also attempted to attack with motorcycles, but most of the elements of the terrorist group were killed, the rest fled the area of ​​clashes.

In the evening, our fighters made progress on this axis and were able to install a number of new points following an attack against the terrorists’ points and positions. During the advance, a suicide terrorist attempted to approach our fighters and detonate himself, but he was targeted from afar and was killed. While the International Coalition’s aircraft carried out several air strikes against the terrorists’ sites, which resulted in leaving a number of killed and wounded in their ranks.

On the other side of this axis, our fighters launched an attack on the terrorists’ positions, killing and injuring a number of them. The terrorists bombed the positions of our forces with heavy weapons and mortars and tried to prepare for a broad attack, but it was also thwarted.

These intermittent clashes continued on several fronts of this axis until the preparation of this outcome.

3- The outcome of the clashes:

– The number of the terrorists’ killed: 63 terrorists.

– The terrorists’ casualties: 2 car bombs, 10 terrorists’ sites, 5 terrorists’ roads, and 1 terrorist tunnel were destroyed.

– The number of strikes launched by the International Coalition’s aircraft: 31 air strike.

Afghanistan

Faryab Province:

Afghan National Security Forces reportedly killed 14 and wounded 21 elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (Taliban), as well as destroyed five motorcycles and two ammunition caches in Ghurziwan district.

Afghan National Police’s element surrendered to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Pakhal Soz area of Gurziwan district.

Kunar Province:

Afghan National Security Forces reportedly killed 15 and wounded six elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Asmar district.

Nangarhar Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed seven elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Surkh Rod district.

Khost Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive device targeted an Afghan National Army’s foot patrol, killing two soldiers in Alishir district.

Ghazni Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed four and wounded four elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, as well as destroyed two motorcycles in Qarabagh district.

Urozgan Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed four elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Deh Rawud district.

Zabul Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan overran an Afghan National Army’s post in Lodinyano area of Arghandab district. According to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s Al-Emarah News, 14 elements of the Afghan National Army were killed and three wounded in the encounter. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan seized four PK machine guns, four assault rifles, and an RPG launcher from the post.

Nimruz Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan ambushed and killed an Afghan National Army’s commander Zabihullah in Ghor Ghori area of Khash Rod district.

Kandahar Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed two elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan and destroyed eight motorcycles in Maywand district.
