Syrian War Daily – 20th of February 2018

Hello and welcome to the 343rd installment of the SWD.

Military events/news are listed below by the governorates:

Aleppo:

Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army, backed by Turkish Air and Land Forces captured 14 localities from the Syrian Democratic Forces’ YPG in Afrin region, as a part of the operation ‘Olive Branch’ (AR: Ghasin al-Zaytun, TR: Zeytin Dalı). Free Syrian Army captured Al-Zaytouna, Arab Wiran, Al-Jamilah, and Deir Sawan in Sharran subdistrict, Hiyani, Sourani, Sharqanli, and Ukanli in Bulbul subdistrict, Al-Dafla in Rajo subdistrict, and Marwanah al-Fawqani, Marwanah al-Tahtani, Qulki, Halkajah, and Taltimah in Jindires subdistrict. After today’s advances, Free Syrian Army linked up Sharran-Bulbul-held areas with Azaz in the northern Aleppo.

National Defense Forces and affiliated militias sent a convoy of around 200-300 fighters to the Syrian Democratic Forces’ YPG-held Afrin region, in order to fight with the latter against the Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army and Turkish Armed Forces. However, as the convoy was going towards Afrin it came under the warning fire of the Turkish Air Force, which resulted in part of the convoy retreating to Syrian Arab Army-held areas. The warning shots by the Turkish Air Force reportedly killed two and wounded five elements.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and the newly-formed Jabhat Tahrir Suriya (Ahrar al-Sham and Harakat Nour al-Deen al-Zenki) clashed in Urum al-Kubra and Al-Saadiyah in the western Aleppo.

Idlib:

Syrian government and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham reached an agreement regarding evacuation of five sick/wounded civilians from Fuah and Kafraya pocket, in exchange for the same number of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s elements from Al-Yarmouk camp, south of Damascus. Syrian Arab Red Crescent transferred five sick civilians from Fuah and Kafraya, accompanied by 11 civilians to Morek in northern Hama. The exchange of the evacuees will take place when Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s elements arrive in Souran, also in northern Hama. The road between Morek and Souran is used as a trading route between Syrian government-held and rebel-held areas, as an alternative to the previous route which was through Abu Dali village.

Homs:

Syrian Arab Army’s artillery targeted Al-Qunaytrat in the Northern Homs pocket and killed two elements of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.

Deir al-Zour:

Spokesperson for the Syrian Democratic Forces’ Al-Jazeera Storm (Asifat al-Jazeera) operation, Laila al-Abdullah reported that Syrian Democratic Forces took control of Al-Bahra village in the eastern Deir al-Zour from the Islamic State.

CJTF-OIR‘s airstrikes over Hajin reportedly killed 16 civilians.

Damascus:

Syrian Arab Army’s artillery and Syrian Arab Air Force targeted Ain Terma, Al-Marj area, Awtaya, Al-Nashabiyah, Beit Sawa, Mesraba, Zamalka, Kafr Batna, Al-Shifuniyah, Douma, Hammouriyah, Saqba, Hazeh, and Jobar in the East Ghouta. According to the Syrian Civil Defense (The White Helemts), at least 37 civilians were killed and several dozen wounded by the targeting of the aforementioned localities.

Rebel forces in the East Ghouta shelled Jaramana and Al-Abbasiyin, Bab Touma, Al-Shaalan, Al-Qisaa, and Al-Baramke areas of the city of Damascus. According to the Syrian Arab News Agency, nine civilians were killed and 49 wounded by the shelling of the aforementioned localities.

Jaysh al-Islam reported an ambush against the Syrian Arab Army’s elements on Al-Zariqiyah front in the East Ghouta. Jaysh al-Islam did not disclose Syrian Arab Army’s casualties from the ambush, but stated that most of the attackers were killed and wounded, while the remaining attackers withdrew from the area.

Afghanistan

Kunduz Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (Taliban) ambushed and killed five elements of the Afghan Local Police in Qalay-I-Zal district. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan seized three assault rifles from the killed elements.

Nuristan Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive device killed one and wounded one element of the Afghan National Police in Kamdesh district.

Laghman Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed three elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in the province.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan reported that its troops ambushed Afghan National Security Forces and United States Army in the city of Mihtarlam, capital of Laghman Province. According to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, several Afghan National Security Forces’ elements were killed and wounded and a tank belonging to the United States Army destroyed.

Nangarhar Province:

Afghan National Security Forces wounded an element of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Sherzad district.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan assassinated Afghan Local Police’s commander Mula Dad Ganda in the city of Jalalabad, capital of Nangarhar Province. Separately, Afghan National Police’s element was killed by a sniper in Jalalabad.

Islamic State’s improvised explosive device killed four and wounded two elements of the Afghan National Security Forces in Hasarik area of Jalalabad.

Maidan Wardak Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan ambushed and killed one and wounded one element of the Afghan National Army in Saydabad district.

Paktia Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan killed two and wounded one element of the Afghan National Security Forces in Zurmat district.

Herat Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed three and wounded one element of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, as well as destroyed several weapons depots and ammunition caches in Gulran district.

Ghazni Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed 11 and wounded three elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, as well as destroyed a vehicle and a motorcycle in Giro, Andar and Deh Yak districts. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan reported that an Afghan National Police’s element was killed in Giro district.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive device targeted Afghan National Army’s tank and killed four soldiers in Gelan district.

Farah Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan reportedly captured three Afghan National Police’s checkpoints in Farahroud area of Bala Buluk district and one checkpoint in the northern part of the province. This information was not reported by the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, but rather by the Farah provincial council chairman, Farid Bakhtour. Bakhtour also stated that 24 elements of the Afghan National Police were killed in the clashes for the checkpoints.

Urozgan Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed four and wounded two elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, as well as destroyed two fighting positions in the city of Tarinkot, capital of Urozgan Province.

Zabul Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed three and wounded four elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Arghandab district.

Helmand Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed 28 elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan and destroyed four drug factories and a camp in Garmsir, Marjah, Musa Qala, and Dishu districts, according to the Afghan Ministry of Defense.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan attacked three and captured one Afghan National Police’s checkpoint in Kochayno and Maldar areas of Nad Ali districts. Seven elements of the Afghan National Police were killed during the clashes for the captured checkpoint, while 13 policemen were killed in the clashes for the other two checkpoints. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan captured four assault rifles, an RPG launcher, and a PK machine gun from the encounters.

Kandahar Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed five and wounded seven elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Shah Wali Kot district. Afghan National Security Forces also seized several weapons depots and ammunition caches.

CJTF-OIR:

CJTF-OIR announced a change in their publishing policy. Now two strikes reports will be published each week, on Mondays and Fridays.
