Syrian War Daily – 17th of February 2018

Hello and welcome to the 340th installment of the SWD.

Military events/news are listed below by the governorates:

Aleppo:

Turkish Armed Forces announced death of one of its elements due to an engagement with the Syrian Democratic Forces’ YPG in Afrin region. This announcement brings Turkish Armed Forces death toll in operation “Olive Branch” to 32 elements. Free Syrian Army’s Firqat al-Hamza announced death of two of its elements due to clashes with the YPG in Rajo subdistrict.

Turkish Land Forces and Free Syrian Army’s artillery shelled Mariamin, Sarinjak, Koubluka, Jabalar, and Anabaki in Afrin region. According to the reports, two civilians were killed and three wounded by the shelling of Sarinjak and Koubluka in Bulbul subdistrict.

Free Syrian Army’s Jaysh al-Nasr (Army of Victory) released a statement appointing the group’s leadership in northern Syria, after the group joined Turkey-led operation “Olive Branch” against the Syrian Democratic Forces’ YPG in Afrin. The group appointed Major General Hassan al-Sheikh as deputy commander-in-chief, Major Zuhair al-Sheikh as chief of staff, and Dr. Hassan Hamidi as head of the political bureau.

Dozens of protesters gathered in TFSA-held village of Sejou north of Azaz and blocked Syrian National Coalition’s delegation from entering Azaz, where the Syrian Interim Government is located. The protesters were angry about the coalition’s positions during the years of fighting in Syria and chanted slogans calling for the downfall of the coalition. The delegation was forced to return to Turkey through Bab al-Salama border crossing.

Idlib:

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s Ibaa News Agency reported that the group arrested a sleeper cell belonging to the Syrian government’s Air Force Intelligence Directorate in the city of Salqin.

Deir al-Zour:

Left over Islamic State’s improvised explosive device killed two children in Syrian Democratic Forces-held Abu Hammam village in the eastern Deir al-Zour.

Damascus:

Syrian Arab Army’s surface-to-surface missiles and artillery targeted Douma and Al-Nashabiyah in the East Ghouta. According to the Syrian Civil Defense (The White Helmets), two civilians were killed and several wounded by the targeting of Douma.

Syrian Arab Army’s Tiger Forces sent a large convoy to Damascus, in preparations for an upcoming offensive against rebel factions in the East Ghouta.

Daraa:

Free Syrian Army and Syrian Arab Army sporadically clashed in Al-Manashiyah district of the city of Daraa. Syrian Arab Army also shelled Daraa al-Balad district of Daraa.

Unknown gunmen killed an element of the National Defense Forces in Mahja, north of Daraa. Unconfirmed reports suggest that the killing of the element comes after an internal dispute between the elements of the National Defense Forces.

Improvised explosive device targeted the vehicle of the Free Syrian Army’s Jaysh al-Thawra in the city of Saida. The explosion wounded Jaysh al-Thawra’s commander Abdul Rahman Mahamid, who was transferred to a hospital in Saida.

Afghanistan

Faryab Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (Taliban) attacked Afghan Local Police’s positions in Sang Zard area of Pashtun Kot district. According to the reports, one element of the Afghan Local Police was killed and two wounded, while one element of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan was killed and two wounded in the encounter.

Balkh Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan killed two, including a commander, and wounded seven elements of the Afghan Local Police, during the clashes between the two in Charbolak district.

Kunduz Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed one, wounded four, and arrested two elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Khan Abad district.

Kapisa Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan repelled Afghan National Security Forces’ offensive in Tagab district. Seven elements of the Afghan National Security Forces were reportedly killed and an element of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan wounded in the encounter. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan seized three assault rifles from the encounter.

Nangarhar Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive devices targeted the vehicle of the ‘National Directorate of Security’ in the city of Jalalabad, capital of Nangarhar Province. The explosion killed National Directorate of Security’s officer Latif and one of his bodyguards.

Maidan Wardak Province:

Afghan National Army’s element was killed in the clashes with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Saydabad district.

Paktia Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s sniper killed an element of the Afghan National Police in Zurmat district.

Ghazni Province:

Afghan Local Police’s element defected to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Deh Yak district. The defected element handed over an assault rifle and a PK machine gun to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.

Paktika Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed five elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan and destroyed a motorcycle and a vehicle in Barmal district.

Farah Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed three and wounded five elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, as well as destroyed a drug factory in Bakwa district.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan overran Afghan National Army’s military base in Nealak area of Bala Buluk district, killing ten soldiers and capturing one in the process. One element of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan was wounded in the operation. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan also destroyed an armored personnel carrier and seized two PK machine guns, 12 assault rifles, an RPG launcher, and an armored personnel carrier.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan ambushed Afghan National Army’s foot patrol in Shib Koh district, killing one and wounding two soldiers.

Urozgan Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed an element of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan and destroyed a vehicle in Deh Rawud district.

Zabul Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan overran two Afghan National Army’s checkpoints in Tabsakhar and Maladin areas of Qalat district. Five elements of the Afghan National Army were killed in the encounters, while the remaining elements withdrew from the checkpoints.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan ambushed and killed Afghan Local Police’s commander Ataullah along with two bodyguards in Karabagh area of Shah Joy district.

Nimruz Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan overran Afghan National Police’s checkpoint in Alealilay area of Khash Rod district, killing three and wounding three policemen in the process. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan also destroyed two vehicles and seized two assault rifles, an RPG launcher, and a PK machine gun from the checkpoint.

Helmand Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed six and wounded two elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, as well as destroyed a vehicle in Garmsir, Nahri Saraj, and Sangin districts.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan raided Afghan National Army’s checkpoint in Mateki area of Nad Ali district. Reports suggest that five elements of the Afghan National Army were killed in the raid.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive device destroyed Afghan National Army’s vehicle in Loy Bagh area of Nad Ali district, killing and wounding six soldiers.

Kandahar Province:

Afghan National Security Forces arrested an element of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Nesh district.

CJTF-OIR:

CJTF-OIR announced a change in their publishing policy. Now two strikes reports will be published each week, on Mondays and Fridays.
