Syrian War Daily – 13th of February 2018

Hello and welcome to the 336th installment of the SWD.

Military events/news are listed below by the governorates:

Aleppo:

Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army, backed by Turkish Air and Land Forces captured two localities from the Syrian Democratic Forces’ YPG in Afrin region, as a part of the operation ‘Olive Branch’ (AR: Ghasin al-Zaytun, TR: Zeytin Dalı). Free Syrian Army captured Omar Simo village in Bulbul subdistrict and Arshali village and surrounding hills in Jindires subdistrict. Reports suggest that six elements of the YPG were killed and one captured during the battles for Arshali. YPG targeted Turkish Armed Forces’ ACV-15 with an anti-tank guided missile in Bulbul subdistrict and slightly damaged it.

Kurdish Red Crescent reported that Turkish Armed Forces’ shelling of Jindires area killed three and wounded several civilians. The organization also stated that one civilian was killed and two wounded by the shelling of the city of Afrin.

Idlib:

Islamic State’s elements in the southeastern Idlib governorate surrendered to the rebel operations room Dahar al-Ghaza and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, after an agreement was reached between the two sides yesterday. According to the agreement, 340 Islamic State’s fighters, including 80 wounded fighters and their families handed over their weapons and localities under their control, in exchange for safe surrender and trial for their crimes. All of the Islamic State-held localities in the region, such as Khuwayn al-Kabir and Ard al-Zarzour are under the control of the rebel factions.

Homs:

Demonstrations were held in the city of Al-Rastan against Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, after the group killed the former pilot and member of the negotiations committee with the Syrian government, Fayiz al-Madani. Al-Madani was reportedly killed due to his communication with the Syrian government regarding the final agreement, which would bring electricity to Al-Rastan and Northern Homs pocket. Revolutionary Internal Security Forces reportedly arrested gunmen that killed Al-Madani and handed them over to the court in Al-Rastan, where they will be sentenced to death. Under the protection of the Free Syrian Army, the demonstrators stormed Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s headquarters at the outskirts of Al-Rastan and expelled all ten elements of the group from the locality. The expelled Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s elements fled to Deir Ful and their headquarters were taken by the Free Syrian Army’s Liwa Rijal Allah.

Hama:

Russian Air Force conducted air raids over Morek, Kafr Zita, Al-Lataminah, Al-Sayyad, and Janabira in the northern Hama, without any reports about casualties from the air raids.

Deir al-Zour:

Left over Islamic State’s improvised explosive device killed two civilians in Syrian Democratic Forces-held city of Gharanij in the eastern Deir al-Zour. Similarly, Syrian Democratic Forces’ element was killed and another wounded by an improvised explosive device in the village of Al-Bahra.

Damascus:

Syrian Arab Army’s artillery and Syrian Arab Air Force targeted Jobar, Mesraba and Douma in the East Ghouta. According to the Syrian Civil Defense (The White Helmets), four civilians were killed and three wounded by the targeting of Douma.

Rebel forces in the East Ghouta shelled Harasta and Al-Qassa area of the city of Damascus. According to the Syrian Arab News, four civilians were wounded by the shelling over Dahiyat al-Assad in Harasta.

Jaysh al-Islam’s snipers wounded two elements of the Islamic State in Al-Uruba area of Al-Yarmouk camp and one element in Al-Zayn neighborhood, south of Damascus.

Iraq

Salah al-Deen:

Islamic State raided positions of the Al-Hashd al-Shaabi’s (Popular Mobilization Units) Saraya al-Salam (Peace Companies) in Al-Jumhuriyah area. According to the Islamic State’s Amaq Agency, six elements of Saraya al-Salam were killed and four vehicles damaged in the raid.

Afghanistan

Faryab Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed two and wounded eight elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (Taliban) in Ghormach district.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan overran Afghan National Army’s checkpoint in Gandab area of Chilgazy district, killing three, wounding one, and arresting one soldier. Separately, Afghan Local Police’s checkpoint in Chichakto area of Qaysar district was raided by the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, killing Afghan Local Police’s commander Qudrat and two elements.

Balkh Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan assassinated National Directorate of Security’s element Abdullah Khan in Dawlatabad district. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan seized Khan’s motorcycle after killing him.

Takhar Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan destroyed Afghan National Army’s tank in Darqad district.

Badakhshan Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed one and wounded one element of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Jurm district. The killed element was reportedly from Tajikistan. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan reported that four elements of the Afghan National Security Forces were killed in an attack on a post in Jurm district.

Kunduz Province:

Samangan Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan ambushed and killed two elements of the Afghan Local Police in Khuram Wa Sarbagh district.

Nangarhar Province:

Badghis Province:

Afghan National Security Forces wounded an element of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Muqur district.

Farah Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan killed two and wounded three elements of the Afghan National Army in Shib Koh district.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive device destroyed Afghan National Army’s tank, killing two and wounding three soldiers in Bulandi area of Pusht Rod.

Afghan National Army’s element was killed by an Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s sniper in Kal Kala area of Bala Buluk district.

Urozgan Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed two elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in the city of Tarinkot, capital of Urozgan district.

Zabul Province:

Two elements of the Afghan Local Police surrendered to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan at the outskirts of Shamulzayi district.

Nimruz Province:

Afghan National Security Forces arrested an element of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan and seized a vehicle containing four kilograms (nine pounds) of drugs in Zaranj district.

Helmand Province:

Afghan National Security Forces arrested four elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Washir district.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan attacked two Afghan Local Police’s checkpoints in Tangano Gudar area of Nawa-I-Barakzayi district, capturing one checkpoint. Seven elements of the Afghan Local Police were reportedly killed in the clashes, while the remaining elements withdrew. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan seized four assault rifles from the checkpoint.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan raided Afghan Local Police’s checkpoint in Saminar area of Jerashk district, reportedly killing four elements of the local police. One element of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan was killed and two wounded in the encounter.

Kandahar Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan raided two Afghan National Army’s checkpoints in Nesh district. According to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, 17 elements of the Afghan National Army were killed in the clashes, while the remaining elements withdrew from the checkpoints. Three elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan were killed and four wounded in the encounter.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive device destroyed Afghan National Army’s vehicle in Badi Karez area of Shorabak district, killing four and wounding three soldiers.

CJTF-OIR:

CJTF-OIR announced a change in their publishing policy. Now two strikes reports will be published each week, on Mondays and Fridays.

Egypt:

Islamic State’s improvised explosive device damaged Egyptian Army’s M60 Patton tank west of Al-Arish.
