Syrian War Daily – 11th of February 2018

Hello and welcome to the 334th installment of the SWD.

Military events/news are listed below by the governorates:

Aleppo:

Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army, backed by Turkish Air and Land Forces captured one locality from the Syrian Democratic Forces’ YPG in Afrin region, as a part of the operation ‘Olive Branch’ (AR: Ghasin al-Zaytun, TR: Zeytin Dalı). Free Syrian Army captured Haj Iskandar in Jindires subdistrict, while the village of Sarnajka in Bulbul subdistrict was briefly captured, before being recaptured by the YPG.

Syrian Arab Army and Hezbollah-affiliated Daraa al-Zahraa (Shield of al-Zahraa) militia reportedly joined the battle for Afrin region on YPG‘s side. Separately, Firqat al-Hamza, belonging to Al-Jaysh al-Watani al-Suri’s (Syrian National Army) Faylaq al-Thani (Second Corps/legion) and Free Syrian Army, sent around 500 newly-trained “Commandos” to fight against the YPG in Afrin region.

Idlib:

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham started clearing operations against the remaining Islamic State’s elements at the eastern outskirts of Umm al-Khalakhil, after repelling yesterday’s Islamic State’s attacks on the village. Reports suggest that three Islamic State’s elements were killed during the clearing operations, while two elements surrendered to Hayat Tahrir al-Sham on Umm al-Khalakhil front. Clashes between the Islamic State and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham reportedly restarted on Umm al-Khalakhil front.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s Ibaa News Agency reported that the group repelled Syrian Arab Army’s attack on Tell Sultan in the eastern Idlib.

Deir al-Zour:

Two Islamic State’s suicide attacks targeted Syrian Democratic Forces in the village of Al-Bahra in the eastern Deir al-Zour. According to the Islamic State’s Amaq Agency, the first suicide attack killed 14 elements of the Syrian Democratic Forces, while the second suicide attack killed ten elements and destroyed a vehicle.

Islamic State started new operations against the Syrian Democratic Forces near the border between Syria and Iraq, by launching attacks on Al-Soussa and Al-Shaafa areas. Islamic State’s Amaq Agency reported that three elements of the Syrian Democratic Forces were killed and one captured during the attack in Al-Soussa area, north of Al-Baghouz village. The agency also claimed that CJTF-OIR mistakenly targeted Syrian Democratic Forces’ elements in Al-Soussa area. Seven elements of the Syrian Democratic Forces were killed in the Islamic State’s attack east of Al-Shaafa village, according to the Amaq Agency.

Damascus:

Syrian Arab Army’s artillery and Syrian Arab Air Force targeted Arbeen, Harasta, Douma, Hammouriyah, Saqba, Kafr Batna, and Al-Nashabiyah in the East Ghouta. According to the Syrian Civil Defense (The White Helmets), five civilians were killed by the targeting of Douma, while two civilians were killed by the targeting of Saqba. Syrian Civil Defense also reported death of one civilian, due to the targeting of Hammouriyah.

Rebel forces in the East Ghouta shelled Jaramana and Al-Abbasiyin, Al-Omawiyin square, and Al-Duwaileah areas of the city of Damascus. According to the Syrian Arab News Agency, one civilian was killed and another wounded by the shelling of Al-Farn and Al-Madaris neighborhoods of Jaramana, while three civilians were wounded by the shelling of Al-Abbasiyin, Al-Omawiyin square, and Al-Duwaileah.

Islamic State’s Amaq Agency reported that Islamic State’s sniper killed an element of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham in Al-Yarmouk camp south of Damascus. Separately, the agency also reported that a Syrian Arab Army’s element was killed by a sniper in Al-Tadamon neighborhood, also south of Damascus.

Quneitra:

Improvised explosive devices targeted the vehicle of the Free Syrian Army’s Jabhat Thuwar Suriya (Syrian Revolutionaries Front), on the road between Nabaa al-Sakhr and Masharah. The explosion killed six elements of the Free Syrian Army, including the commander of Jabhat Thuwar Suriya, Abu Hamza al-Jolani.

Iraq

Salah al-Deen:

Two Islamic State’s improvised explosive devices destroyed two vehicles of the Al-Hashd al-Shaabi’s (Popular Mobilization Units) Saraya al-Salam (Peace Companies) in Al-Ishaqi area.

Afghanistan

Faryab Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (Taliban) killed three and wounded two elements of the Afghan National Army, during the clashes between the two at the outskirts of Shirin Tagab district.

Afghan Local Police’s commander Muhammad died from the wounds sustained from the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive device, which targeted his vehicle in Arkalik area of Qaysar district on the 9th of February.

Takhar Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed five and wounded three elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, as well as destroyed a fighting position and three improvised explosive devices in Darqad district. One of the five killed elements is Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s local commander Mir-i-Vali.

Kunduz Province:

Kunar Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan ambushed Afghan National Army’s elements in Wata Pur district and killed one soldier.

Nangarhar Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan assassinated Afghan National Police’s officer Abdul Ghafoor in Surkh Rod district.

Maidan Wardak Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive device destroyed Afghan National Army’s tank in Jalrez district.

Khost Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive device killed one and wounded two elements of the Afghan National Army in Nadir Shah Kot district.

Badghis Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan arrested an element of the Afghan Local Police in Jalayano area of Jawand district.

Herat Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan overran Afghan National Army’s checkpoint in Naw Abad area of Ghoryan district. Reports suggest that an element of the Afghan National Army was killed and two captured in the clashes for the checkpoint. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan seized a PK machine gun, and three assault rifles from the checkpoint.

Ghazni Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan raided Afghan National Army’s checkpoint in Shalgar district, killing one and wounding one soldier.

Afghan Local Police’s element surrendered to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan with his weapon in Gelan district.

Farah Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed an element of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Bala Buluk district.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan reported that it shelled Farah airbase, where the Italian Army is present, as part of the NATO-led Operation Resolute Support. According to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, seven soldiers were killed and 12 wounded in the shelling. Similar shelling on the airbase occurred on Friday, reportedly killing one and wounding four soldiers.

Urozgan Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed four elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan and destroyed a fighting position and several weapons depots and ammunition caches in the hilly area of Shah Mansour.

Zabul Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive device killed two and wounded one element of the Afghan National Security Forces in Surkh Sang area of Arghandab district. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan also attacked reinforcements arriving at the scene of explosion, reportedly killing one and wounding one element of the Afghan National Security Forces.

Helmand Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed six and wounded five elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Nad Ali, Garmsir, and Jerashk districts. Afghan National Security Forces also captured two motorcycles, two vehicles, and several weapons depots and ammunition caches, as well as destroyed 32 fighting positions and defused 16 improvised explosive devices.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan attacked Afghan National Security Forces in Do Rahi area of Nahri Saraj district, killing two elements.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive device killed four elements of the Afghan National Security Forces in the vicinity of Haji Tor Aka Karez area of Nahri Saraj district.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s snipers killed five elements of the Afghan National Police in Kochyano area of Nad Ali district.

Kandahar Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive device destroyed Afghan National Security Forces’ armored personnel carrier in Syah Sang Dara area of Khakrez district.

CJTF-OIR:

CJTF-OIR announced a change in their publishing policy. Now two strikes reports will be published each week, on Mondays and Fridays.
