Syrian War Daily – 1st of February 2018

Hello and welcome to the 324th installment of the SWD.

Military events/news are listed below by the governorates:

Aleppo:

Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army, backed by Turkish Air and Land Forces captured four localities from the Syrian Democratic Forces’ Yekîneyên Parastina Gel (People’s Protection Units) in Afrin region, as a part of the operation ‘Olive Branch’ (AR: Ghasin al-Zaytun, TR: Zeytin Dalı). Free Syrian Army captured Ali Kar and Zara villages, Al-Ham camp, and Bulbul in Bulbul subdistrict. According to the reports, 14 elements of YPG were killed in the battles for Ali Kar, Zara, and Al-Ham, while 24 YPG‘s elements were killed in the battles for Bulbul. Two Free Syrian Army’s elements were killed and ten wounded in the battles for Bulbul.

Turkish Armed Forces conducted strikes over 32 targets in Afrin region. Turkish Armed Forces also stated that at least 99 elements of Yekîneyên Parastina Gel were “neutralized” today and 811 since the start of the operation ‘Olive Branch’.

Turkish Land Forces’ artillery targeted Afrin, Hamam, Kandi Mizn, Bashmara, and Baswfan in Afrin region. According to the Syrian Arab News Agency, two civilians were killed by the shelling of Afrin and Hamam, as well as significant material damage caused.

Syrian Arab Army captured Tell al-Fokhar, Al-Wasitah, Talijinah, and Umm al-Karamil from the rebel factions in the southern Aleppo.

Idlib:

Syrian Arab Army’s artillery, Syrian Arab Air Force, and Russian Air Force targeted Saraqib, Al-Tah, Jarjanaz, Maarashurin, Kafr Amim, Maasran, Tell Touqan, Aslamin, Al-Kanais, Al-Ghadfa, Al-Sheikh Idris, Maar Tahroma (Maaret Hurmah), Khan Sheikhoun (Shaykhun), Al-Habit, and Maarat al-Numaan in Idlib governorate. Reports suggest that five civilians were killed and several wounded by the targeting of Saraqib.

Rebel media activists started a new campaign demanding the release of Ahrar al-Sham’s commander Abu Azzam Saraqib and dozens of other Ahrar al-Sham’s elements from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s prisons. The activists called for the release of the aforementioned individuals, in order to stop Syrian Arab Army’s advances in Idlib governorate from Abu al-Duhur. Commander Abu Azzam Saraqib joined the fighting in 2011 and was previously leader of Liwa al-Mathana. Abu Azzam participated in battles for Nayrab, Khanasir, Al-Ikarda, and Bisanqul in Aleppo governorate, as well as fought against the Islamic State in the northern Aleppo in 2014.

Hama:

Syrian Arab Army captured Abu Khanadiq from the Islamic State in the northeastern Hama.

Russian Air Force conducted several air raids over the village of Kafr Nabudah in the northern Hama. According to the Syrian Civil Defense (The White Helmets), five civilians were killed and three wounded by the air raids. The wounded individuals were transferred to Al-Orient hospital in Kafr Nabl (Kafranbel).

Deir al-Zour:

Islamic State targeted Syrian Democratic Forces’ elements with an anti-tank guided missile at the outskirts of Al-Bahra village, northwest of Hajin. According to the Islamic State’s Amaq Agency, one Syrian Democratic Forces’ element was killed and another wounded by the attack.

Damascus:

Syrian Arab Army’s artillery and Syrian Arab Air Force targeted Douma, Arbeen, Harasta, and Awtaya in the East Ghouta. According to the reports, two civilians were killed and five wounded by the shelling of Douma.

Rebel factions in the East Ghouta shelled Al-Mezzeh and Ash al-Warwar neighborhoods of the city of Damascus. Syrian Arab News Agency stated that three civilians were killed and several wounded by the shelling of Ash al-Warwar, however, several sources claim that casualty numbers are higher and estimated at seven killed and 13 wounded.

Faylaq al-Rahman repelled Syrian Arab Army’s attack towards Arbeen in the East Ghouta. According to the Faylaq al-Rahman, more than ten elements of the Syrian Arab Army were killed and two bulldozers damaged in the failed attack. Similarly, Jaysh al-Islam repelled Syrian Arab Army’s attack on Hawsh al-Dawahirah front in the East Ghouta. Jaysh al-Islam’s spokesman, Hamza Birqdar stated that 15 Syrian Arab Army’s elements were killed and a T-72 tank destroyed in the failed attack.

Daraa:

Rebel factions operating in Daraa governorate, backed by Israeli Defense Forces announced the start of Al-Fatihin (Conquerors) battle against the Islamic State-affiliated Jaysh Khalid ibn al-Walid, aimed at completely eliminating the group from Daraa governorate. Rebel and Israeli Defense Forces’ artillery shelled several Jaysh Khalid ibn al-Walid-held localities, such as Adwan, Saham al-Jawlan, and Tell al-Jamoua. Rebel factions participating in Al-Fatihin battle are Ahrar al-Sham, Tajammu al-Ahrar, Liwa Mujahideen al-Farouq, Jaysh al-Thawra, Firqat al-Haqq, Al-Wiyat Mujahidi Hawran, Fawj al-Midfaeiat al-Awl, Firqat al-Shahid Jamil Abu Zayn, Al-Tajammu al-Askari li-balad Tasil, Tajammu Ahrar al-Ashayir, Liwa al-Karama, Firqat Ahrar Nawa, Liwa al-Farouq, Sad al-Bagha operations room, and Tajammu al-Shahid Abu Hamza al-Naeimi.

Iraq

Kirkuk:

Islamic State blew up a booby-trapped building in the village of Kawaz, east of Hawijah. According to the Islamic State’s Amaq Agency, the explosion occurred when Al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units) entered the building, which resulted in killing of three elements.

Afghanistan

Faryab Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed 12 and wounded nine elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (Taliban) in Khaja Sahib Posh district. Afghan National Security Forces also destroyed two motorcycles and seized large quantities of weapons and ammunitions. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan reported that it ambushed Afghan National Security Forces’ elements in Qara Shiekhi area of the city of Juma Bazar in Khaja Sahib Posh district. According to the Islamic Emirate, at least ten elements of the Afghan National Security Forces were killed and wounded in the ambush.

Baghlan Province:

Afghan National Security Forces arrested an element of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in the province.

Laghman Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed five and wounded seven elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Alingar district. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan reported that five elements of the Afghan National Security Forces were killed and six wounded during the clashes in Alingar district.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan raided Afghan National Security Forces’ post, as well as clashed with the reinforcements, at the outskirts of the city of Mihtarlam, capital of Laghman Province. According to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, seven elements of the Afghan National Security Forces were killed, nine wounded, and five tanks destroyed during the clashes. One element of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan was killed and two wounded in the encounter.

Nangarhar Province:

Islamic State assassinated an element of the National Directorate of Security in the city of Jalalabad, capital of Nangarhar province.

Khost Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive device targeted Afghan National Army’s elements in the city of Khost. The explosion reportedly killed four and wounded two soldiers.

Badghis Province:

Afghan National Army withdrew from a military base and five checkpoints in Khair Khani area of Qadis district. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan entered the areas after the army’s withdrawal.

Ghazni Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan conducted an operation against the Afghan National Security Forces and its reinforcements in Shalgar district. According to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, 12 elements of the Afghan National Security Forces were killed, nine wounded and four tanks destroyed in the operation.

Paktika Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s element infiltrated Afghan Local Police’s ranks in Urgun district and opened fire on the policemen. The infiltrator reportedly killed three elements of the Afghan Local Police, before he linked up with nearby Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s elements.

Farah Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed seven and wounded four elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Bala Buluk district.

Urozgan Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed two elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Chora district.

Zabul Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s sniper killed an element of the Afghan National Security Forces near Bagh Posti area of Arghandab district.

Three elements of the Afghan Local Police surrendered to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Shinkay district.

Helmand Province:

Kandahar Province:

Afghan National Security Forces conducted large-scale operations against the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Maywand district, killing 20 elements of the group, including three suicide bombers, as well as destroying one vehicle, according to the Afghan Ministry of Defense. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan reported that 14 elements of the Afghan National Security Forces were killed and three vehicles destroyed, during the clashes in Band Taimore area of Maywand district. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan also reportedly forced Afghan National Security Forces to withdraw from the area and seized a PK machine gun and an RPG launcher.

CJTF-OIR:

CJTF-OIR announced a change in their publishing policy. Now two strikes reports will be published each week, on Mondays and Fridays.

Islamic State’s sniper killed an element of the Egyptian Army south of Al-Arish.
