Hello and welcome to the 315th installment of the SWD.

Military events/news are listed below by the governorates:

Aleppo:

Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army, backed by Turkish Air and Land Forces captured several localities from the Syrian Democratic Forces’ Yekîneyên Parastina Gel (People’s Protection Units) in Afrin region, as a part of the operation ‘Olive Branch’ (AR: Ghasin al-Zaytun, TR: Zeytin Dalı). Free Syrian Army captured once again the village of Adah Manli in Rajo subdistrict, which was recaptured by YPG. Faylaq al-Sham’s media official Osama Abu Zeid stated that Free Syrian Army also captured five hills in the vicinity of Adah Manli, reportedly killing 15 YPG‘s elements in the process. Free Syrian Army also captured the village of Umar Ushaghi in Shaykh al-Hadid subdistrict.

Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army opened a new front in Afrin region against YPG, in Jinderes subdistrict, by capturing the village of Hamam. However, the village of Hamam should be considered as disputed for now, as both parties claim control over it. Commander of the Free Syrian Army’s Liwa Samarqand, Ahmad Fayad al-Khalf was killed in clashes against YPG around Hamam village.

Syrian Democratic Forces’ Yekîneyên Parastina Gel recaptured the village of Kurni village in Bulbul subdistrict from the Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army. Yekîneyên Parastina Gel also appears to be in control of the village of Shankal, which was disputed between the two parties since the 21st of January.

Turkish Armed Forces announced death of two soldiers, due to clashes with the Syrian Democratic Forces’ Yekîneyên Parastina Gel in operation ‘Olive Branch’. This announcement brings Turkish Armed Forces’ death toll in operation ‘Olive Branch’ to three soldiers. Turkish Armed Forces also stated that at least 260 elements of Yekîneyên Parastina Gel were “neutralized” since the start of the operation ‘Olive Branch’.

Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army and Syrian Democratic Forces’ Yekîneyên Parastina Gel continued to clash on the fortified and important Jabal Birsaya north of Azaz. According to the reports, the control of the mountain is disputed, with each party controlling around half of it.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that the Syrian Arab Army and Russian personnel withdrew from the buffer zone between Yekîneyên Parastina Gel and Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army, west of Manbij. The buffer zone was established at the beginning of the May in 2017.

Turkish Land Forces’ artillery shelled Jindires subdistrict of Afrin, reportedly killing and wounding four civilians. The artillery also shelled Kafr Safra village, causing only material damage. Syrian Democratic Forces’ Yekîneyên Parastina Gel shelled city of Kilis in Turkey’s Kilis Province third day in a row, without any information about the casualties.

Syrian Democratic Forces’ Jaysh al-Thuwar (Not to be confused with the Southern Front’s Jaysh al-Thawra, which operates in Daraa and Quneitra governorates) announced its readiness to participate alongside YPG against the Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army and Turkish Armed Forces in Afrin region.

Al-Hasakah:

Turkish Land Forces’ artillery shelled Al-Halaliyah neighborhood in the city of Qamishli. According to the reports, two civilians were wounded by the shelling.

Idlib:

Yesterday’s reports about the Syrian Arab Army capturing Abu al-Duhur were false, as the locality was reportedly captured today from the rebel factions. Syrian Arab Army also captured Al-Khifa village from the rebel factions, west of Abu al-Duhur.

Damascus:

Syrian Arab Army’s artillery and Syrian Arab Air Force targeted Douma and Awtaya in the East Ghouta. According to the Syrian Civil Defense (The White Helmets), two civilians were killed and several wounded by the targeting of Douma. Rebel Police Command of Damascus and its countryside reported death of three of its elements, due to the shelling of their headquarters in the city of Douma.

Rebel forces in the East Ghouta shelled Al-Wafideen camp, northeast of Douma. According to the Syrian Arab New Agency, the shelling of Al-Wafideen camp only resulted in material damage.

Syrian Arab Army reportedly launched an attack against Faylaq al-Rahman on three axis in Arbeen’s area. Clashes between the two continue around Arbeen.

Daraa:

Free Syrian Army’s factions repelled Islamic State-linked Jaysh Khalid ibn al-Walid’s infiltration attempt in Hayt, southwestern Daraa. One element of Jaysh Khalid ibn al-Walid was killed and two wounded in the encounter.

Afghanistan

Kunduz Province:

Baghlan Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed two and wounded 11 elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (Taliban) in Daght-e-Shahab al-Din area of Pul-e Khomri district.

Kunar Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s commander and wounded another element in Ghaziabad district.

Nangarhar Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed three and wounded one fighter of the Islamic State, as well as destroyed a base in Achin district.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive device destroyed Afghan National Police’ vehicle, killing and wounding three policemen in the vicinity of the city of Jalalabad, capital of Nangarhar Province.

Islamic State assassinated an element of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Bati Kot district.

Logar Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed three elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Charkh district.

Herat Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive device destroyed Afghan National Army’s tank, killing two and wounding three soldiers in Ala Chah area of Gulran district.

Ghazni Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed four and wounded five fighters of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Andar district.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan raided two Afghan National Army’s checkpoints in Libyan area of Shalgar district. Five elements of the Afghan National Army were killed and three wounded, while one element of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan was killed and two wounded in the encounter.

Paktika Province:

Afghan National Security Forces conducted large-scale operations against the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Nika, Barmal, Gayan, and Urgun districts. According to the Afghan Ministry of Defense, 62 elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan were killed in the operations, as well as 20 individuals suspected of belonging to the group were arrested. Afghan National Security Forces also reportedly destroyed 13 motorcycles and several weapons depots.

Farah Province:

Afghan National Security Forces conducted large-scale operations against the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Pusht Rod and Bala Buluk districts, killing 31 and wounding 15 elements of the group. Among the 31 killed elements are two Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s commanders, Yousef Helmandi and Mussi Lala. Afghan National Security Forces also destroyed five vehicles, a motorcycle, and several ammunition caches during the operations.

Urozgan Province:

Afghan Local Police’s element surrendered to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan with his weapon in Khas Urozgan district.

Zabul Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed one and wounded two elements of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Daychopan and Shah Joy districts. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan reported that it engaged Afghan National Security Forces’ patrol in Shah Joy district, killing one and wounding another element.

Helmand Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed six and wounded one element of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Nad Ali and Jerashk districts.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s suicide bomber surrendered to the Afghan National Police in Nad Ali district.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan engaged Afghan National Security Forces’ elements that arrived to Daraiya and Nahra areas between Nad Ali and Marjah districts. The forces arrived in the two areas to carry out operations against the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. According to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, seven elements of the Afghan National Security Forces were killed and a tank destroyed by several group’s attacks and improvised explosive devices.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s snipers killed two elements of the Afghan National Army, at a checkpoint in Basharan area of the 4th District of the city of Lashkar Gah, capital of Helmand Province.
