Syrian War Daily – 10th of January 2018

Hello and welcome to the 302nd installment of the SWD.

Military events/news are listed below by the governorates:

Aleppo:

Syrian Arab Army captured Tell Abu Ruwayl and Tell al-Muqbirah from the rebel factions in the southern Aleppo. Syrian Arab Army also advanced against the rebels southwest of Khanasir, capturing Hawarin, Ramlah, Muzyalah, Rasm al-Sheikh, and Tell Subhah.

Improvised explosive device targeted the vehicle of the Syrian Democratic Forces’ Manbij Military Council near Al-Fatah mosque in the city of Manbij. Driver of the vehicle was killed, while two other elements and a civilian were wounded by the explosion and transferred to hospitals.

Latakia:

Abu Amara Special Task Brigade reported that its improvised explosive device targeted Syrian Arab Army’s ammunition depot in the vicinity of Salanfa village. The explosion destroyed the depot, killed three and wounded five soldiers.

Idlib:

Syrian Arab Army made significant advances against the rebel forces in the southern Idlib and reached the outskirts of Abu al-Duhur airbase, by capturing over a dozen of localities. Syrian Arab Army reportedly captured Jubb Abyad, Al-Aziziyah, Ras al-Ayn, Rasm Niyas, Rasm al-Jahash, Rasm al-Burj, Umm Tamakh, Rasm al-Khushuf, Al-Buwaydir, Kawlat al-Buwaydir, Biaea Kabira, Biaea Saghira, Raiyfa, Umm Jurayn, Zifr Kabira, Zifr Saghira, Dabshiyah, Al-Buwaytiyah, and Tell Salmu.

Suicide bomber on a motorcycle targeted Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s gathering in Al-Qusur neighborhood of Idlib city. The attack killed seven elements of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and wounded a dozen more, as well as several civilians present in the area at the time of the explosion.

Hama:

Syrian Arab Army captured Umm Miyal village from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham in the northeastern Hama.

Deir al-Zour:

Syrian Democratic Forces reportedly killed 151 elements of the Islamic State during the clashes in the city of Gharanij, according to the Syrian Democratic Forces’ Press Office.

Four Islamic State’s elements, including two women, conducted suicide attacks near the Syrian Democratic Forces’ checkpoint in the village of Tayyib al-Fal.

Damascus:

Syrian Arab Army’s artillery and Syrian Arab Air Force targeted Beit Naim, Hazrama, Beit Sawa, Harasta, Madyara, and Arbeen in the East Ghouta. According to the Syrian Civil Defense (The White Helmets), a civilian was killed and 15 wounded by the air raids over Madyara. Syrian Civil Defense also reported death of a civilian and injury of several others by the targeting of Arbeen.

Jaysh al-Islam reportedly infiltrated Syrian Arab Army’s lines on Al-Zariqiyah front in the East Ghouta. Jaysh al-Islam’s spokesman Hamza Birqdar stated that the fighters infiltrated Al-Marj area, killed nine and captured three soldiers of the Syrian Arab Army.

Daraa:

Islamic State-linked Jaysh Khalid ibn al-Walid raided and briefly captured Al-Jubaila and Al-Bakar villages from the Free Syrian Army’s factions in the southwestern Daraa. The raid took place during the night, which caught the Free Syrian Army off-guard and forced it to send the reinforcements from the nearby Nawa. However, Jaysh Khalid ibn al-Walid ambushed and besieged the reinforcements in Al-Jubaila village. Israeli Air Force’s drones conducted several strikes in support of the Free Syrian Army in the area. Jaysh Khalid ibn al-Walid captured over a dozen of prisoners, several vehicles, weapons and ammunition before withdrawing from the villages. Free Syrian Army’s Military Council in Quneitra and Golan reported death of four of their fighters in the raid.

Free Syrian Army’s factions that were involved in the clashes with Jaysh Khalid ibn al-Walid are; Tajammu al-Ahrar, Al-Firqat 406 Musha (406th Infantry Division), Firqat al-Shahid Jamil Abu al-Zayn, and Firqat Ahrar Nawa.

Iraq

Baghdad:

Iraqi Security Forces conducted operations in Al-Buhayrat, Al-Halabasa, Al-Shihah, and Al-Saadan areas, north and west of Baghdad. Security forces found and seized 25 improvised explosive devices and home-made missiles, as well as 39 various mortar shells. The improvised explosive devices were safely detonated in a controlled explosion. Furthermore, several wanted individuals were arrested in the operations.

Afghanistan

Faryab Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s (Taliban) improvised explosive device targeted the vehicle of the Afghan National Army’s commander Qalandar and killed him in Arkalik area of Qaysar district.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s sniper killed an element of the Afghan Local Police in Khiekha area of Dawlat Abad district.

Kunar Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed four and wounded two fighters of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in the province. Furthermore, an ammunition cache was also destroyed.

Parwan Province:

Afghan National Police’s element surrendered to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Ghorband district.

Laghman Province:

Afghan National Security Forces and Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan clashed in the city of Mihtarlam, capital of Laghman Province. Reports suggest that two elements of ANSF were killed and two wounded, while IEA lost one element in the clashes.

Nangarhar Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed an element of the Islamic State in Achin district.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive device targeted Afghan National Army’s elements in Pachir Aw Agam district, killing one and wounding two soldiers.

Khost Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan clashed with the Afghan National Security Forces for five hours in Alishir district. Five elements of the Afghan National Security Forces were reportedly killed and a vehicle destroyed in the clashes.

Badghis Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan ambushed Afghan National Security Forces’ convoy in Zanzir Bagh area of Qala i Naw district, destroying a tank and a pickup, as well as killing two and wounding two ANSF‘s elements.

Herat Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan ambushed Afghan National Security Forces’ convoy at the outskirts of Kushk (Rabat-e-Sangi) district. The ambush reportedly killed three and wounded seven elements of the Afghan National Security Forces.

Daykundi Province:

Afghan National Security Forces and Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan clashed in Zain area. Three elements of the Afghan National Security Forces and one element of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan were killed in the clashes.

Ghazni Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed five and wounded six fighters of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in Qarabagh district.

Paktika Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive device targeted Afghan National Army’s elements in Sar Hawza district, killing two and wounding six soldiers.

Farah Province:

Afghan National Security Forces conducted large-scale operations against the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in the province, killing 21 and wounding ten elements of the group. Among the 21 killed IEA‘s elements are seven fighters from Pakistan. Furthermore, three vehicles and several weapons depots were destroyed in the operations.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive device destroyed Afghan National Police’s tank in Gajagin area of Pusht Rod district, killing two and wounding four policemen.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s sniper killed an element of the Afghan National Police and wounded another one in Naw Abad area of Bala Buluk district. Similarly, Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s sniper killed an element of the Afghan Local Police in Shewan area of Bala Buluk district.

Urozgan Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed four and wounded two fighters of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in the province, as well as destroyed several IEA fighting positions.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan ambushed a group of Afghan National Police’s elements in Zartali area of Deh Rawud district, killing four policemen and seizing an assault rifle.

Helmand Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan captured Afghan National Army’s checkpoint on Lashkar Gah road in Shindak Manda area of Nahri Saraj district. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan reportedly killed five soldiers during the clashes for the checkpoint and forced the remaining ANA‘s elements to withdraw. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan seized three assault rifles and a light machine gun from the checkpoint. Similarly, Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan captured Afghan National Army’s checkpoint in Haidar Abad area, located between Jerash and Sangin districts. Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan killed three soldiers and seized three assault rifles, a PK machine gun, and an RPG launcher from the checkpoint.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan raided Afghan National Police and Afghan Local Police’s checkpoints in Parchaw area of Jerash district. According to the reports, four elements of the Afghan Local Police were killed and two elements of IEA wounded in the raids. Similarly, Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan raided Afghan Local Police’s checkpoint in Namro area of the 3rd Police District in the city of Lashkar Gah, capital of Helmand Province. Seven elements of the Afghan Local Police were killed in the raid.

Kandahar Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive device allegedly destroyed NATO’s tank in Haji Dahi Killi area of Dand district, near the Kandahar International Airport. According to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, all elements on board were either killed or wounded.

CJTF-OIR announced a change in their publishing policy. Now two strikes reports will be published each week, on Mondays and Fridays.

Egypt:

Islamic State’s sniper reportedly killed two soldiers of the Egyptian Army south of the city of Rafah, North Sinai Governorate.
