Syrian War Daily – 4th of December 2017

Hello and welcome to the 265th installment of the SWD.

Military events/news are listed below by the governorates:


Hayat Tahrir al-Sham regained control of Al-Hawiwi village from the Syrian Arab Army, after the latter captured it during the night. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s commander, Edi Abu Faisal said that they are working on regaining control of Al-Rashadiyah and Tallat al-Rashadiyah from the Syrian Arab Army. According to Abu Faisal, 20 SAA‘s soldiers were killed and wounded in the clashes, while one HTS‘ fighter was killed and six more wounded. During the capture of Al-Hawiwi, HTS reportedly captured a tank in the locality.


Jaysh al-Fatah’s (Army of Conquest) security force, part of the General Administration, restructured itself and is now acting as the Idlib Police of the Syrian Salvation Government (Not to be confused with the Syrian Interim Government) in areas under the control of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. The head of the Idlib police department, Abu Mohammed al-Suri said that the restructuring finished last month and that they are working in coordination with the Ministry of Justice.

Unknown gunmen opened fire on a former headquarters of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham in the village of Iblin. The attack killed one and wounded another individual, after Asheibar family engaged the attackers. Asheibar family used to be a part of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. Asheibar accused Aloush family for this attack, due to a personal dispute between the parties. Aloush family is a part of the Ahrar al-Sham.

Unknown gunmen killed Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s element on the road between Harem and Salqin, northwest of Idlib. Commander in the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s ‘Islamic Police’, Khalid Anis Musa was targeted by an improvised explosive device in the village of Basla. The condition of Musa is currently unknown after an explosion targeted his vehicle.

Improvised explosive device targeted a vehicle of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham in the village of Kafriya, near Sinjar. The explosion reportedly killed one fighter and injured additional seven.


Hayat Tahrir al-Sham repelled Syrian Arab Army’s attack on the outskirts of Balil village in the northern Hama. Reports claimed that more than 15 SAA‘s fighters were killed in the clashes.

Islamic State’s attack on Hayat Tahrir al-Sham-held Rasm al-Ahmar village was repelled by the latter.

Deir al-Zour:

Islamic State’s improvised explosive device reportedly killed ten Syrian Democratic Forces’ fighters in the village of Abu Hammam.

Syrian Arab Army captured Al-Qataa and surrounding areas from the Islamic State and have now reached the outskirts of Al-Jalaa. Around 15 kilometers (9 miles) separates SAA‘s forces on Al-Mayadeen front from those in Al-Bukamal (Al-Bukamal).

Islamic State downed a Syrian Arab Air Force’s warplane in the vicinity of Al-Bukamal. The pilots of the downed warplane were reportedly captured by the Islamic State near the village of Al-Baqan.

Islamic State targeted a group of Syrian Arab Army’s soldiers with an anti-tank guided missile west of Al-Bukamal. Amaq Agency’s statement said that 11 soldiers were killed and wounded.

Syrian Arab Army’s artillery shelling of Ain Terma killed one and wounded six civilians in the locality.

Rebel shelling of Damascus and its vicinity killed one and wounded eight civilians. The shelling of Al-Abasiyin garages in the eastern Damascus killed one and wounded four people. Four people were wounded by the shelling of Jaramana. Shelling of Al-Zahra neighborhood caused material damage.

Unidentified warplanes targeted radar installations in the Syrian Arab Army’s Al-Dumayr Military Airport. Spokesman of the Free Syrian Army’s Quwwat al-Shahid Ahmad al-Abdo (Forces of Martyr Ahmad al-Abdo), Omar Sabreen stated that the smoke was seen above the radar installations in the airport, as well as sounds of flying and shelling were heard. Sabreen also stated that they’ve been unsuccessful in determining the number of casualties nor the identity of the warplane that targeted the military airport. Israeli Air Force was named as the main suspect.

Five smaller Free Syrian Army’s factions based in Eastern Qalamoun region joined the larger FSA‘s group, Jaysh Tahrir al-Sham. Jaysh Tahrir al-Sham’s spokesman, Nours Rankous said that the groups that joined are Liwa Shuhada al-Ghouta, Liwa al-Shahid Omar Haidar, Katibat Fustat al-Muslimin, Katibat Shuhada Bakhea, and Katibat Aisha Umm al-Mumnin.



Islamic State’s Amaq Agency reported death of two Al-Hashd al-Shaabi’s (Popular Mobilization Units) fighters and injury of another one, as a result of the IS’ attack on Abu Dahan area in the city of Muqdadiyah.


Iraqi Security Forces conducted operations in Al-Mahasna and Kilo 5 areas, south of Baghdad. Security forces cleared a booby-trapped building and seized three improvised explosive devices, which were safely detonated in a controlled explosion. Furthermore, several wanted individuals were arrested in the operations.


Kunduz Province:

Afghan National Security Forces arrested seven fighters of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan during anti-insurgency operations in Khan Abad district.

Maidan Wardak Province:

Afghan National Security Forces arrested Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s fighter in Saydabad district, seizing his weapon and ammunition.

Ghazni Province:

Afghan Air Force conducted airstrikes against Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s convoy in the province. The airstrikes killed three local IEA commanders and wounded six fighters, as well as destroyed vehicles in the convoy, according to Mohammad Zaman, Ghazni Police’s chief.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan raided Afghan National Police’s checkpoint in Deh Yak district, killing one policeman.

Paktia Province:

Afghan National Security Forces’ operations in Zurmat district killed four and wounded two IEA fighters.

Farah Province:

Afghan National Security Forces killed one and wounded two fighters of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan during the operations in Bala Buluk district.

Helmand Province:

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s improvised explosive device destroyed Afghan National Army’s armored vehicle in Kongk directorate between Sangin and Jerash districts.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan repelled Afghan National Security Forces’ attacks in Takhla, Jogram and Khash Bazar areas, Garmsir district. Five IEA‘s improvised explosive devices were also used in the clashes, which killed eight ANSF‘s elements and two IEA fighters.

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan ambushed Afghan National Army’s foot patrol leaving a military base in Bargao area of Jerash district. IEA reportedly killed 12 ANA‘s soldiers in the ambush.


Between the 1st and the 3rd of December 2017 CJTF-OIR has conducted 28 strikes in Syria. CJTF-OIR‘s main focus in Syria at the moment is Deir al-Zour-Albu Kamal region where they did 28 strikes supporting SDF‘s operations against IS destroying 14 IS vehicles, a tactical vehicle, five IS fighting positions, an indirect fire weapon, four heavy weapons, and five explosive hazards.
